After Ronaldo having a great season with his incredible form in the last season, Real Madrid was getting more interested on him. A lot of rumors were spreading that Ronaldo might join R.Madrid after the Euro 2008.
While everybody was worrying that the no.7 might be leaving, the Gaffer stood up and announced Ronaldo will be staying at United this season! Everyone was relieved to hear about that, but a lot of people said that this was an agreement between Ferguson and Ronaldo that he stay for one more season and may join Real Madrid next season. Even though I knew it I hope it wasn't true.
In the summer transfer market, United signed a pair of Brazilian twin brothers- Rafael and Fabio, the da Silva brothers. Yet another time, on the last minute before transfer window closes, Ferguson had signed Dimitar Berbatov from Tottenham with a transfer record of £30.75m and wore the no.9 shirt after Saha left to Everton.

This season was yet another fantastic season for Manchester United and CR7. Even though Ronaldo didn't score as much goal as last season, but he still maintain his incredible form and helped United won the Club World Cup in Japan. United also won the League cup.
However none of this can compare to Manchester United for winning the English League title for the 18th times!!! Manchester United won the BPL title in the third consecutive seasons for the second time!! It was truly unbelievable.
Also in that season, after playing for Manchester United for 2 decades, Ryan Giggs finally received the PFA player of the year reward! He truly deserved it.
It was truly a historical moment as United won the 18th title the same record as Liverpool.
Besides BPL, Manchester United also entered the UEFA Champion League final again for the second consecutive seasons. However this season's final was not on United side. Barcelona won 2-0 against United.

After another amazing season, winning the title for the third consecutive seasons, Ferguson really made his promise. On 1st July 2009, Cristiano Ronaldo joined Real Madrid for a World transfer record of £80m and made him the world most expensive player! He finally fulfilled his childhood dream.
For me it was really sad season for not able to see Ronaldo to play for United again. However I still hope he can make a success in Real Madrid and really hope someday he will come back to Old Trafford again.
Ronaldo was not the only player that left United at high note, Carlos Tevez chose not sign to a permanent contract with United and join United local rivalry- the noisy neighbor, Manchester City. While Ronaldo left United full of wishes, Tevez left full of hatred. The fans boo him whenever he came back to Old Trafford.
After Ronaldo left, United need a new winger and Ferguson signed Valencia from Wigan. Despite the record deal for Ronaldo, United got a cheaper deal by signing the free agent, Michael Owen and let him be the new no.7!
Even though Owen wasn't really Ferguson's first team players, but he did scored some memorable goals, such as the extra time goal against Manchester City.
After Ronaldo left, it was Rooney's time to shine. Scored a total of 34 goals for the whole season, the highest so far. There was no stopping him to score goals especially by using his head. He was simply incredible that season and got himself the PFA Player of the Year reward and also the Barclays Player of the Season.
Even though Rooney had a splendid season but it was not enough to help United to win the BPL title. It was a tight race between Man United and Chelsea. There was no confirm winner until the last game. In the end Chelsea won the title with just 1 point difference.
Even so, it wasn't a trophy-less season. United won the League cup for the second consecutive seasons, the first team that done that.

Ronaldo's departure really affect United this season, but it was not the main reason United can't win the title. It was due to the injury of Van der Sar in the first half of the season and Ferguson replaced him with Ben Foster, a young English goalkeeper. He did a lot a stupid mistakes and let United to loss some unnecessary points. He then later be sold to Birmingham.
Even though it was disappointing that United lost the title with just 1 point, but we believed United will come back strong in the next season!
